Where history, character, and cocktails meet...

If walls could talk, Hotel Sorrento would have a lot to say... probably over a well-shaken martini.
Since opening in 1909, this storied landmark has been more than a hotel; it’s been a gathering place for artists, travelers, and Seattleites looking for a setting with both soul and style. Step inside and you’ll find vintage tile floors, a mahogany bar that feels equal parts timeless and cinematic, and the kind of hospitality that makes you want to stay for “just one more.” For our (Young Professionals of Seattle) August Happy Hour, we’re lucky enough to host in their outdoor courtyard at Stella, the hotel’s restaurant—an ideal backdrop for warm evenings, cool drinks, and new connections.
To learn more about what makes Hotel Sorrento special, we spoke with Chris Jacoby, Director of Sales & Marketing, who shared his perspective on the hotel’s history, culture, and role in the community.
"While other hotels offer amenities, we offer atmosphere—steeped in history, elevated by style, and always connected to the city we call home."
What sets the Hotel Sorrento apart from other hotels in the area?
Chris Jacoby: Hotel Sorrento is more than a place to stay—it’s a living piece of Seattle’s story. Since 1909, we’ve welcomed generations of travelers, artists, and locals through our doors. What sets us apart is the soul of the place—you feel it in the vintage tile under your feet, the glow of the mahogany bar, and the genuine hospitality of our team. While other hotels offer amenities, we offer atmosphere—steeped in history, elevated by style, and always connected to the city we call home.
The Hotel Sorrento is a gathering place for the community. What does that mean to you?
Chris: It means we’re more than a hotel—we’re a third place, a trusted backdrop for everything from first dates to final toasts. Whether you’re a neighborhood regular popping in for happy hour or a visiting guest discovering the city for the first time, the Sorrento is where stories unfold. That sense of belonging is what drives us: we’re here to serve, connect, and celebrate with the community we love.

If you could see more of one thing in the restaurant/hotel industry, what would it be?
Chris: More celebration of character. In an age of polished minimalism and brand uniformity, we believe there’s power in personality—in honoring the quirks, the stories, and the heritage that make each place unique. We’d love to see more hotels and restaurants leaning into what makes them truly special, rather than blending in. Guests are craving realness, and that’s where the magic lives.
How do you hope people feel when they walk into The Hotel Sorrento?
Chris: Transported. Whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth, we hope stepping into the Sorrento feels like a deep exhale. Warm light, vintage charm, the hum of conversation, and the sense that you’ve arrived somewhere special. Our hope is that every guest—local or traveler—feels seen, welcomed, and inspired to linger just a little longer.
The Unique Experience at Hotel Sorrento
Hotel Sorrento offers more than just a place to stay. It provides an experience steeped in history and character. The hotel’s design reflects its rich past, with every corner telling a story. Guests often comment on the warmth of the atmosphere, which invites them to relax and enjoy their surroundings.
The outdoor courtyard at Stella is particularly special. It’s a perfect spot for gatherings, especially during the summer months. The ambiance is enhanced by the lush greenery and the gentle sounds of the city. This setting allows for meaningful connections, whether you’re catching up with friends or meeting new people.
A Commitment to Community
The commitment to community is evident in every aspect of Hotel Sorrento. The staff is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment. They strive to make every guest feel at home. This dedication extends beyond the hotel itself. The Sorrento actively participates in local events and supports nearby businesses.
This connection to the community enriches the experience for guests. It allows them to feel a part of something larger than themselves. When you stay at Hotel Sorrento, you’re not just a visitor; you’re part of a vibrant community.
The Future of Hotel Sorrento
Looking ahead, Hotel Sorrento plans to continue evolving while maintaining its unique character. The team is always exploring new ways to enhance the guest experience. They are committed to preserving the hotel’s history while embracing modern trends.
This balance ensures that Hotel Sorrento remains a beloved destination for both locals and travelers. The hotel will continue to be a place where memories are made and stories are shared.
We're excited. There’s something refreshingly real about Hotel Sorrento’s approach. In a city that sometimes feels like it’s trading charm for condos, the Sorrento has held onto its soul. That’s exactly why we’re bringing our August Happy Hour to Stella’s outdoor courtyard—because history, character, and a cold drink on a summer evening is a combination we can all get behind.
