BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN SEATTLE

Black History Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the impact, culture, and contributions of Black communities - both historically and today. In Seattle, Black history is deeply rooted in neighborhoods, music, art, activism, and community spaces that continue to shape the city.

Rather than attempting to capture everything in one place, this article is intentionally local and participatory. It highlights ways to engage with Black history and culture this month - through events, learning resources, and community-driven exploration - while pointing to trusted guides and calendars for deeper dives.

Whether you’re attending a parade, joining a festival, or looking to shop local, there are plenty of ways to get involved and show your support... this month and beyond:

Supporting Black-owned businesses is one meaningful way many people choose to engage during Black History Month. Rather than curating a single, static list here, we’re pointing to trusted, well-established directories that meaningfully highlight Black-owned businesses - locally, regionally, and nationally.

These resources are actively maintained, widely used, and surface a far broader range of businesses than any one list could capture.

A LIVING, COMMUNITY-POWERED SPOTLIGHT

This article is designed to evolve. Rather than relying on a single voice to define what gets highlighted, we invite community members to help shape future spotlights—by submitting businesses, events, and recommendations throughout the year.

Black history in Seattle isn’t confined to one month. February is simply a moment to pause, acknowledge, and engage more intentionally.
